Silver Echappement a Cylindre HUIT RUBIS Pocket Watch

I recently acquired this watch. It has "US Army, Capt. R. Cox, 1867" stamped inside case. Any thoughts on the watch would be appreciated.

Hi Joy

A silver cased PW, swiss bar style movement, cylinder escapement, 8 jewels, kw/ks from the 1860.
With the french inscripions on the case and movement it was not originally intended for the english speaking customer.
I am rather doubtfull about the 'personalisation'. It is punched (time period would be engraved), looks like made with a to-days letter and numerical punch set. The style of the punches seems to be modern too.

Regards
Gerald

Yes, it's kind of hard to know how and when the inscription was done. You would think that if someone inscribed it to "increase" its value that they would have put in an actual Civil War year such as 1865. They could, of course, been mistaken about when the Civil War took place.Smile

Overall, it is a nice watch. Runs and keeps time.
