Waltham Model 1872
Recently acquired a 18K hunting cased model 1872 Waltham pocket watch. My local repair specialist tells me it needs a new BALANCE STAFF.

Any thoughts on compatibility with other Walthams. Where can I get a replacement???

Donald, with fewer than 60,000 of these made in two different lettered models it is not surprising that Waltham quickly dismissed reference to service parts on them. The basic similarity to the model 1888 in some respects may play into being able to use a 1888 staff, I just do not know for sure without actually pulling ths staff and looking at it.
You could enquire of our parts guru Brian to see if he has one at;

Be sure to include the serial number of your watch movement.

Don-

I was fortunate enough to pick up the leftovers of 16s and 18s staffs and staff jewels from a waltham suppliers cabinet a few years ago. In with the parts was some factory 1872 staffs. If you cannot locate them elsewhere, let me know and we can work something out on one. I doubt I will ever use 18 of them anyways! they are a little pricy for me and besides that the wife may have something to say about it of I was going to!

David, how do you determine which of the 2 "lettered" models I might have or need?

Donald, the easiest way is to remove the broken staff and look at it. If your service person has that ability then a picture helps, or you could get "1 of each" from Jared and try the one that works best.

Donald-

The main difference between the two is the hub size. the 4253 has a large hub and large collet. If i'm correct the 4251 has a small hub and large collet. They also made a 4252 and 4254 from what I understand that are impossible to find. they are large hug small collet and small hub, small collet.

do you have the ability to turn the hub and collet down if needed?

Don-

I packaged up the staffs for you today. Even after being in storage for so many years, the staffs are in pristine condition. They are very shiny and show no signs of corrosion. Let me know how they work for you!
