A Few Questions About A Waltham Model 1860
Picked this watch up on Ebay & after receiving it I have a few questions.

1. How is the movement removed from the case? I don't see any case screws so I am not too sure on what is holding it in.

2. Any clue as to what these cases were made of? The price guide mentions a sterling silver case but this one is yellow gold in color. Other than a case number there are no manufacture marks or if the case is gold filled or what. The case is worn in spots but there doesn't appear to be any brass showing.

3. I am assuming this is the original case since it is made for a key wind & set from the back, is that a safe assumption?

4. I need a second hand for it, does anyone have an example of what it might have originally had.

From the serial number 300407 it places the date of 1867.

Thanks for your time & patience.

Cool watch Tom.

Does the bezel come off? If so could come out the front.

Hi Michael

I found how it comes out, I didn't see there is a case screw down below the balance.

Tom,

Now that you mention it I see it also. Amazing how they did things. With that case screw configuration I would agree that this is the original/correct case for that movement.

Hi Tom

The case seems to be original. If there is no brassing at the worn spots I would take the case to a jeweller for a gold test ! I don't know much about the marking practise at those times in the States but I think there is a good chance of an unmarked gold case (perhaps a low K gold alloy).

For the second hand have a look at the picture.

Regards,
Gerald

Thanks Gerald. I think I am going to send this off to Chris Abell to be repaired, Chris says he has a new gold test so perhaps he can tell me what the case is made of.
