Elgin grade 474

Peter ClareElgin grade 474
I picked up this 16s hunter recently after browsing and it piqued my interest as there is not much info online and it looks like only 300 were made, all in 1923. I purchase this one from Melbourne Australia.
17 jewel pendant set hunter adjusted 3 positions looks to be good quality.
None of the references I have has any model designated, but I assume it could be a model 6.
If anyone has any further information I would love to hear it - particularly as it needs a new balance staff.
Regards
Peter in Oz

Bill MandersPeter,
Even the yellow book doesn't tell us anything about the watch, except the 300 made.
It is obvious that the Elgin database is way off on this one. Hopefully Claude will chime in on this one.

David AbbeI discussed this with Paul, and we both agreed that with dials marked "Made in USA, Elgin certainly produced these only for export. So other than having a factory record of production and grade number, few if any ever showed up back here to be classified in the collector's annals.

Claude GriffithYou will find these in the open face and hunter style movements, both I think were made in only 300 each and were export models. I would have to look again but I think the grades were 474 and 475 and have the striped dmk with the wavy wind wheel patterns and were ps, 17j, adj3p and very good grades.
BTW very nice find since you figure with only 300 made and they were export models I doubt that there are many to choose from and not very many that the guys in NA would have. I have the open face version but not the hunter.

Bill MandersClaude,
In the Elgin yellow book it lists that serial number 25328220, as a Gr. 474, and actually does not list a Gr. 475 at all, at least not that I could find. Now we all are aware that there is a lot of discepancies in the yellow book ????

Claude GriffithBill if you look in the raw serial number data it is there, they exist and I have one. Look in the range of 24,771,xxx in the raw serial numbers. I think Roy E did not list all grades if he did not see one of the grades, there are some skips in his grade listing and the 475 is one of them.

Bill MandersClaude,
I didn't go back far enough when I was looking. I thought that they likely would be in the same range of numbers.
The other thing is that his serial number comes up as a 474, rather than a 475, so where does that put the hunters, can they be either/or ?

Claude GriffithWhat does it come up as in raw serial number list, not what is online. Elgin made two types hunter and open face and both were only made in the qty of 300 and probably nearly all if not all were for export.
Also some databases might miss the boat if they stick to the run of 1000 rather than runs of 300.
