Brian both of yours are "Big Kahuna Hunters", so they get BIGGER eagles than my lowly Open Faced little chicken!

Some very nice private label's shown here....

This is a 12s movement that I recently found....
It is a Hennegen-Bates Company, double signed on the dial and movement.... the balance runs smooth but the second hand will not move so this one will need to go get fixed up a bit....

And it is in need of a hunter case also....

Any comments, please.... Big Grin

Regards,
Jerry

Jerry,
Your watch is a 12s Illinois, model 2, grade 228, 15 jewels unadjusted, stem wind and set.
It looks like the second hand might be hitting the dial.

If your interested your watch was from a jeweler William H Hennegen, James O Bates & John D. Reynolds, they are listed in a 1890 Baltimore directory.

Thanks to both, Brian & Tom....

The second hand does clear the dial, close but not touching....the pallet fork does not move when the balance turns....

That info on Hennegen & Bates is good Tom....

I think finding a case is going to be difficult.... Confused

Jerry

I just bought this private label Waltham P.S. Bartlett model 1877 #1239910 from Leonard Abbott and can't find any info on the movement name. Maybe someone can find out something. It's marked "Scharnke. V Will." or "Scharnke. & Will." Pittsburgh, PA.

It looks to have been made in Dec. 1879. The cuvette is dedicated to A. Endres in 1880 so this is most likely the original coin case.

The dial is marked A.W.Co. Waltham. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It looks like the jewelery store that sold your watch was Scharnke & Will, which was Julius Scharnke & Chas C. Will, in the 1880 census Juiluis is listed as a watch maker.

I wonder of that means the Endres Family was local too and could be found. Hit first Initial is "N", could be Nathaniel.

I also thought the same but searching for a N. Endres in Pa. I didn't have any luck. I will keep seeing if I can find something.

Hi Tom and David...it's actually A. Endres so the Adam may be him, if he did indeed live in Pittsburgh. The time frame is about right. I am impressed with the research sources that you have, Tom. You always seem to be able to track down info on anything we throw at you! Wink
Thank you for the scoop on Scharnkle & Will, also. I will let Leonard know, too, as he is curious.

Jerry, If the pallet fork doesn't move when the balance wheel spins you may have a broken or missing roller jewel. If you manually work the pallet back and forth, does the escape wheel rotate? If it does, that would indicate the train is free, which would once again point back to the roller jewel as being the culprit.

I like those watches with the eagle on the movement. Does anyone know when the eagle officially became the national bird? I have a swiss watch with the eagle on the case. It might help to date the watch.

Well, that's way too early for my watch, of course. I don't think my eagle is a bald eagle, though. A little thin on top, but not bald. Is there any significance to the bird looking to the left, as opposed to the right?

Here is a little 12s eagle motif case that I am rather fond of. A higher grade Stewart Special will be going in it eventually.
