Eric UnseltA Bargain 992E
I was offered this Hamilton for $200, so we haggled for less, and a 992E gets added to the pile:

Eric UnseltIt had one of those horrible yellow plastic crystals, and that got replaced in a hurry (thanks, Mike

).
The hands suffered greatly from that crappy crystal, so I sanded them down, buffed them out, and re-blued them. I could've bought a better set, but I wanted to keep the originals with the watch.
A flawless porcelain-enamel dial:

Eric UnseltA very nice Model 3 992 Elinvar, keeping Stoner time.
Thanks to our own Brian Cavanaugh for the mainspring, and the extended discussion about exactly which one was the correct one

.

Bruce ByrdI was thinking about putting my case-less 992E in a model 10, but after seeing yours in that model 2.... I think I'm gonna try to find a model 2.. Gorgeous watch!

Buster BeckWhatever choice you make in cases and movement marriages, try and keep in mind to make it "era correct".
By using the link/charts below one can see that Eric's movement would require an "H400,000 to H499,999" serial numbered case and Bruce's movement would require an "H300,000 to H399,999" serial numbered case. Please note that Eric's case could be correct since the case was made in 1939 and cases and other materials were "stockpiled" by Hamilton in bins and to assemble a watch, a needed part was simply grabbed from the bin. As long as a case is a year or two earlier, this would hold true BUT if the case were "later", then there is a problem with documenting the combination for the most part.
When assembling cases and movements today, one should try and not throw up red flags where none are needed and may not be accepted by a prospective buyer at a later time.
Here are a couple of links on IHC to accomplish that;

Jon HartThe Model 10 (a little to harder to find than the number 2 BOC) case can be a nice fit for the 992E movement, if the year of the case can be matched up to the movement year, imho

Larry LamphierWOW, nice one Eric!!
That is a really nice find!!
It looks like you have a real winner, AND the last run of the 1940 992E is even better!
I sure wouldn't change anything on this one!!
Regards,
Larry

Bud MellessI don't know where all the 992E owners are when I'm shopping but you certainly found one of them this time Eric. What a nice watch to find for such a great price. Well done Eric.
