Michael P. McNameeIllinois Grade 185, 16s Model 5 Getty Bridge Marked "No. 989 Special"
Anyone have any info on this recent Ebay find? I can't find a single reference to it in this forum. I believe its a 16s Illinois Grade 185, Model 5 open face Getty, Movement Serial # 2118352. It's cased in a Fahy's coin silver case. The only manufacturer's mark is "No. 989 Special". Is this a private label watch? Anyone know who may have commissioned it? It was apparently manufactured ca. 1909. I really like the dial, but does anyone know if these hands would be correct? As always, thoughts appreciated!
Regards,
Mike

Illinois Watch Co made a habit of naming and numbering watches for no real reason- I have seen # 333, 523, 555, 500, 777, 805, 850 & 989. I do have a record of another " 989 " Special in my database Ser # 2,049,599 Also a " 185 " 17 Jewel.
These do make for fun collecting!

Lorne WasylishenThe Meggers/Ehrhardt Illinois Blue Book from 1985 mentions these in the private label section.
989 Special, Illinois Watch Co., Springfield, 17 Jewels, Adjusted (Ca 1909)
(16S - 17 - ON5L - A - "185") ......... $50 - 70
It is a nice looking movement, I must get a Getty model one day.

Michael P. McNameeThanks Terry and Lorne. I too think it's a neat looking movement, and I really like the dial.
