Arthur PharesColumbus pocket watch
Hi guy/gals. I like the website. I was hunting for intelligent enthuses, and I feel like I am about to be schooled. A lot of great information on here.
To give the gist of it, I buy storage units, (just like as on tv). I come across a nice Columbus watch and not to many watch/jewelry shops seem to be too intelligent and such items.
I have a lot of questions. I am not an enthuses. so excuse my ignorance.
I included pics. and let me start there and not speak to much to start with, so I don't ask the wrong questions.
I hope my drop box link will work,

Thank You

Tom Bruntonlooks to me like a high value solid 14K gold case you lucky little rascal

Arthur PharesThanks so far guys.
I question the "solid 14k" only because another site stating if the engraving "champion" was on the case, it still may state 14k but only be considered gold filled. opinion?

Tom Bruntontook a look and found that info also. Waltham marked cases and J Boss cases are sometimes as well not quite what they claim to be

Edward L. Parsons, Jr.Welcome to IHC185 Arthur!
I made a jpeg from your dropbox image (see attached).
A Dueber Champion is a gold-filled case. The "Dueber Champion 14K" mark just means it's 14K gold-filled. Everyone understood what this somewhat ambiguous terminology meant back in the day, but now it is often misinterpreted.
Any sort of brand name like that on a case signature denotes some kind of gold-filled case. Solid gold case signatures just give the case maker's name and the gold content, without a brand name.

Arthur PharesThanks Ed & guys, I hope we can all concur on the case.
The watch works but not as it should. It winds-up good, and will tick for several seconds, then stops. I can tap the side and it will tick again for several seconds then stop. I have read to not let any person work on it. Who would be suggested? If were just talking about cleaning and some oil, what costs are involved?
What is the watch worth in this condition? and after repairs, in working condition?
Also I don't understand how it is "graded" what grade is the watch?
Thanks
Art

but this how I price my watches:

David AbbeArthur please refrain from bumping it until it has been cleaned and restored to working condition. The mechanism depends on a couple of UNDAMAGED sapphire jewels about the cross section of a human hair and maybe 1.5 mm long.
The case and movement of your Columbus in good appearing and operating condition would be of considerable interest to add to the collections of more than a few of our members. The "Champion" mark was another way of saying it is a Gold Filled case. Very High quality but not solid.
I suggest that if and when it can be restored, you could carry and enjoy it without fear of the battery going dead!
I am one of the several members who would be happy to carefully inspect, clean, lubricate and restore your watch.
If you want to talk about restoring it, please e-mail me a phone number and time to call: david@glopar.com
