HI,
I'm a new member and have questions about an Elgin I bought recently for $89. I was told on another site that the movement, case and dial don't go together. I'm sure about the case not being correct as the movement screws don't match and there is far too much space between the movement and case sides. I would like to find out what case would be period correct for the movement and a dial of course.
The more is: How the heck do I make photo's small enough to post here. I did d/l Picasa, but I'm still clueless on how to do it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome aboard Bill! You really did come to the right place. These people are very helpful and friendly. I just bought my 1st Elgin too and want to get it as correct as possible. Sorry, I also know nothing about resizing photos or posting.

I used the export to folder option in Picasa. Thanks for the suggestion whoever gave it!!!

In photo # 2 you can see all the space around the movement and the mismatched screws holding it in.
If I loosen or remove those screws, the movement slides around in the case a lot. The dial is allegedly not original,but I know some folks changed to these when they could afford to buy them. My dad changed nearly all his work watches to this type dial. He worked for over 40 years on the B&M and other railroads.

Charlie, Thanks for the welcome, got so tied up with those stupid photo's I had to take a break, drove me crazy those things did!!
I noticed all the knowledge floating around this site, that's why I just had to join. Maybe now I can learn a little something about these little mechanical wonders!!

From what I can see in the pic the serial number is 22630493 which dates the movement to 1920. You can click here for the search results. But I think the dial is at least from the 40's because of the star on it.

Based on the research I've been doing I think the case it's in is from '50s so looks like I have my work cut out for me trying to remake it!!
Oh, well, nobody said it ws easy working with these things, did they?

Movement- 19J, Grade 455, circa 1920. It requires a mid to high pendant case with an antique style bow. Elgin RR "marked" cases debuted in 1923. This watch would have been cased by any of the case makers [generic].

Case "3355"- used from 1930's-1940's

Elgin Dial with Star symbol- 1933 to mid 1940's
