A newly updated record on the Pocket Watch Database for the rare Seth Thomas private label pocket watch, “The Golden Eagle Watch - Made For - J. M. Gibbs - Hannibal, MO.”, prompted me to research the background of the private label. I wish that there was a way to transmit this information to the owner in case some of it is not known to him.

Here is the information that I was able to find:

Joshua M. Gibbs, born February 14, 1842, in Blue Lick Kentucky, was a Sergeant in the Union Army during the Civil War with General Sherman on his march to the sea, and was wounded at Kenesaw Mountain. After the Civil War Joshua Gibbs lived at 313 Broadway in Hannibal Missouri with his wife Seraph and two sons, Willard and Giles. Mr. Gibbs operated a jewelry store (311 Broadway) there, J. M. Gibbs Jewelers, which he moved, in approximately 1876, to Main Street where he eventually operated as J. M. Gibbs and Sons. Mr. Gibbs died in 1914 and is interred at Riverside Cemetery in Hannibal.

The postcard photographs below show Main Street in Hannibal Missouri in the early 1900’s when J. M. Gibbs operated his jewelry store there.
