Thomas A. OverfieldRestoration Questions
Well...a couple of disclaimers first: I put this in the forum here because this isn't really asking about repair, but cosmetics. Also, I did do a search on these topics but wasn't happy with the info I found or it was a few years old. That said:
I need recommendations on a couple of things related to the cosmetic restoration of a pocket watch case. First, I'm interested in getting a metal dial restored. I've read about a few places but I didn't get the feel for how they would do with exactly restoring an old dial. I've read that some do good enough and some can do a top notch job if instructed to. I don't want to get something back that is 80% like what I sent them. Does anyone have personal experience they can share on this?
Next up is case restoration. A long time ago I used Wuischpard & Son for a restoration but they've not returned me emails as of late. I know, I know...I should phone them but the lack of response so far makes me wonder a bit about how timely they are now. I've got a case that need minor cosmetic restoration such as reapplying a brushed finish to the back and doing some light polishing of the mirror finished bits. Besides the place I mentioned can anyone recommend any others.
Thanks..hope people don't think I'm beating a dead horse on this topic.
Best,
Tom O.

Mortimer SchwartzI am having a metal dial cleaned and restored and should have it back in about two weeks more. A local watchmaker sent it to a source in Ohio. I will be happy to give you my estimation of the results and the name of the source, which I do not presently have, if you send to me your email address. My address is mdschwartz@ucdavis.edu.

Scott CerulloI have had metal dials refinished by International dial and they came out beautifully. If you get it back and you aren't satisfied, send it back to them. They are very reasonable. As far as the watchcase repair, Wuischpard and Son is the only company I ever used. The Hunter case came back in excellent shape and my customer was very very happy. I would be very confident in using them again.

Michael LogginsScott, were those metal dials from wristwatches or pocketwatches? Thanks for your help.

Leon HarrisHi Thomas, I have restored several case in the past and would be glad to look at yours. As far as the satin finish and some polishing, should not be a problem to do. If you want to send me the watch you can email me or just send it to

Scott CerulloMichael,
The one that turned out to be the stunner was a 12 size Elgin with a silver dial. These watches are not very popular among collectors, but with the dial done it looked like a million bucks. The watch was sold on Ebay for two and 1/2 times the book value.

Thomas A. OverfieldLeon,
Thanks for the reply. I don't know how my search on this board missed you. Now that I look by your name I see mentions of your work all over. I'll be in touch.
