Jerry TreimanI don't have a Father Time movement (Elgin didn't make one in 12-size), but they did stamp the old guy's image in to the back of the dial on my C.H.Hulburd model. (sorry about the picture quality - he is only a few millimeters high and this was done with my scanner)

Phil DellingerYour pictures are excellent Stephanie!!
Here is my contribution for Father Time.
18 size Elgin, 21 Jewels, Model #8, Wind Indicator, Freesprung Model, S/N 14409652 ca. 1909.
Notice how crudely that the Elgin factory adapted the watch to a wind indicator version by adding a small winding indicator gear directly into the barrel bridge where it is marked "21 Jewels". Almost looks like an afterthought design to me.
IHC 185 member Rich Kuhn recently overhauled this watch for me and it is working perfectly.

Stephanie O'NeilHi Jack,
Nice picture of Father Time,

but it's no substitute for the real deal Jack, sorry.

Speaking of pictures, Jerry T.'s Father Time was quite interesting!

I would like to learn all I can regarding Father Times. I'd like to see more pictures from our members as well. Let's participate. Keep this thread going! And yes, you can post other pictures of Father Times besides watches!

Mark CrossPhil, sorry so late in asking this question, but how in the heck to you regulate your Father Time? I couldn't see a regulator anywhere on your movement! Just curious! Rich Kuhn does WONDERFUL work, doesn't he?! Regards. Mark

Wayne SchlittI couple of random comments:
Jerry: Cool pic of the father time on the Hulburd dial! I had no idea it was even there!
Phil: I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but your 18s FT has a invar (Guillaume) balance. The existance of such watches was something I was not aware of until after I pretty much stopped actively collecting info on Elgin watches. While I have seen a document that lists 30 watches with invar balances, yours is the first watch that I have seen a picture of with one. (Yours is not one of the 30 listed.)
See:
http://elginwatches.org/cgi-bin/elgin_sn?sn=14409652+v%3D9 for more details.
Oh, and yes, all 18s Elgin wind indicators have the gear cut into the middle of the "jewels" label. I suspect that these were added at the factory, but after the watch had been mostly completed.
Larry: The second link (to your movement?) comes up with a not-found error.
Jim: That 18s HC FT G=274 is fairly rare. The records I have are incomplete, but it appears that around 320-330 were made. Could tell me the serial number on your watch? It might hit one of the gaps of unknown grade 274's so that I can fill it in.

Phil DellingerMark Cross,
Great observation on your part!

The watch that I shared is what is called a "freesprung" style and a pictue of can be found on page 175 No.23 of C. Shugarts price guide.

Aaron BereiterMark,
The "free sprung" watches are regulated with the meantime screws. Once set by the watchmaker no further adjustment was necessary.
Nice watch Phil.

Phil DellingerWayne,
I did a google search for
invar (Guillaume) balance and found this great biography.
Next I discovered
AFTER 100 YEARS, THE USES FOR INVAR* CONTINUE TO MULTIPLY which tells all about this alloy. Very interesting!
Thank you for the information that you contributed to my watch!
This discussion site sure is increasing my knowledge about horology.

Great taste too! I'm also glad you are willing to share pictures and any information you can regarding our great hobby of horology! Thanks so much.
Mark C.,
Good eye. Lead us to more learning!
Wayne,
Thanks for information, comments and your contribution of an 1874 Elgin Almanac Comic ad. Neat!
Phil,
Thanks for the noted two live links regarding invars etc.
Okay, I just know there are other members who have a Father Time or two or maybe more in their collection. Share pics or comment regarding your Father Time/s.

Jerry TreimanI stumbled across this image while browsing through my file of pictures snagged from eBay. This is the back cover of a 1900 Hampden watch material catalog. Hampden was often railing against the "watch trust" that controlled much of the movement and case market.
