Mark G. ReitzWaltham 16s Screw UP..Help!!
To my dismay I dropped my favorite Waltham 16s 1944 army model and bent the pivots,so I thought I would attempt the Impossible and try to restaff, this is s.n.31897532 17j...Any way I got the staff out but trimmed the hub on the balance wheel, not knowing it took a friction grip staff # 4860...I under stand Waltham sold a blue hub #4865 for this type of problem??Or should I just find an old movement and start over...Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks,Mark

Cecil McGeeHey Mark, I'm not quite sure what it is you need. If it is a 16s Waltham balance wheel, then I have several. Be glad to send you one. Cecil

David AbbeMark, If the Blue steel hub is still in your balance wheel and you only trimmed out a little at the top of the entry taper, it is worth trying to press in a new staff.

Cecil McGeeHey Mark, Like I said,I'm not quite sure if I have what you need. I have a complete balance assembly, balance wheel, roller and table, and hairspring, with good staff pivots for a model 1888 Waltham, and several wheels for a model 1889. If any of this will work for you,let me know, and it is your's,no charge.

Mark G. ReitzThanks Cecil!....I will try the 1888 balance assembly and an 1889 wheel and see which works & return the other, but I feel as if I should pay something!

Samie L. SmithMark the serial number checks out too be a model 08 17 j. grade no. 1617 a Balance complete from a model 1899 or model 1908 should work these mostly have a pivot size of .010 or .011 mm .The hub can be changed if the hub is removed without enlargeing the hole in the wheel .I don,t now how hard the hub would be too find.
The parts number for a balance complete for the Grade 1617 and model 1899 is different but they will work the hub,s are the same in both balances and they use the same staff ,,the big difference in the 2 balances is the model 1899 and model 08 regular balances for the vanguards and riverside etc. had gold screws and 2 sets of timning screws on some .

Richard RomeroMark,
If possible you should try to use the balance that came with the watch. The hub you mentioned is available at PTPWP and not expensive. I would call and make sure the hub is correct for your application before you order it.

Mark G. ReitzHi Cecil, sorry I did not receive the email,my server is doing wierd things Couldn't find in my junk mail folder either.I would love to try an 1889 balance wheel. Thanks to all for your help,if I understand right if I used a 4861 tapered staff I would need a different size roller table than the 4860 uses
