Hamilton Railroad crown
A friend brought me a 992B in a bar-over-crown case, with the crown flopping loosely around. The stem is broken right below the crown's socket; someone must be a really enthusiastic winder.
Stems are usually hardened and I doubt that drilling and a screw extractor will work here. The next thought is to rust the screw out with alum.
The crown is the very flat one marked HAMILTON RAILROAD on top. Do any of you gentlemen know what that crown is made of, under the gold plate, and if it would survive an alum bath?

Joe,

The crown is essentially hardened brass that has been gold plated. If all goes well it should survive being bathed in alum and the stub of steel stem would likely not. Leon Harris or Chris Abell are among those who might have additional thoughts on how to proceed.

Let us know how it goes.

Excuse the large pictures but this is how Leon repaired a crown with a broken stem. This is how he received it.

He then welded a square rod of some sort to it....

I'm in awe at Leon's skill, and will continue to aspire to acquire some more of my own. In the meantime, I'll give the crown an alum bath and watch it carefully for the first day. Thanks to you gentlemen for your help.
