Your watch is the Elgin G M Wheeler 18s as you surmised. Made in Elgin Illinois. Nice watch.

David:

Definitely an Elgin pocket watch, G.M. Wheeler was one of the founders of the company, the serial number you gave says it was manufactured in 1873, are you sure it doesn't have a extra remember in the 3 million category. The dial has been painted over with the rabbit, a watch dealer named Roy Erhardt did this too many pocket watches, that had imperfect dials, and made them more attractive for sale.
