Non Existant Elgin??

Bud MellessNon Existant Elgin??
Hi everybody;
I've just come across something odd. At least to me it looks odd.
I was looking at this watch and I typed the serial number
90890611 into the Elgin serial number database and it comes back with "No watches found"
Can this really happen? Did it not get listed when it was made or what's the story here. Oh, and
90890677 doesn't work either.
Any help would really be appreciated.
Bud

Bud MellessOops!!! I think I just discovered why it doesn't show up. I think the serial number is: 11906806
I thought they (the serial numbers) would read correctly the way it is presented on the movement but I guess this one is UPSIDE DOWN. Am I right about this? Is this the answer to why it didin't show up in the Elgin database?

Bud MellessThanks Phil, and you too Jerry.
You know I kept looking at the two "1"'s at the end (or beginning) of the number and thinking to myself, could they be 7's maybe? That's when it hit me to stand on my head and look.

Claude GriffithI just figured it was too much "spiked" holiday egg-nog. Depending on the potency of the egg-nog the numbers start doing all sort of things!!!! The 339 was a nice mid-grade Elgin 3 finger bridge, not adjusted, no steel escape wheel, no gold train, pendant set hunter but when properly serviced they are a good running and a nice looking movement. If you like the bridge movements some nice one to pick up would be the 280 or it rarer marked twin the BWR 3 finger. some like the 241, 244 were adjusted and if you jump into Doilie variations 243 or 246 seen at this location
Elgin Lace DoiliesDecember 27, 2010, 16:22
Bud MellessHi Claude;
I must say I do like those finger bridge movements, and I may even buy this one so I can get an idea how they look in my hand.
Thanks for the tips on these as well Claude.

Jim BielefeldtI really like the 3 finger movements. I would love to have one of those lace doilies. Now that I know they exist I will be on the lookout.

Edward L. Parsons, Jr.Don't feel bad Bud, I once saw a 185 member perflexed by what he thought was a 17-jewel watch that he couldn't find in the serial number tables.
Turns out he was reading "21" upside down as "17" . . .

Best Regards,
Ed

Jim BielefeldtI said that Buster, but if I pay $500 for a watch after Christmas my wife would strangle me.

Mark CrossI remember YEARS ago doing this exact same thing, and one of our members suggested I turn my monitor upside down and re-reading the numbers so I could find the right date. They were right too!
