Bergeon screwdrivers or-?
What is a good substitute for Bergeon screwdrivers? I just want a decent set that won't cost so much-Isn't there a make that I can depend on not to bend with a tough screw? It makes me crazy if I damage a screw with a tool that isn't doing it's job... Or is it standard procedure to be constantly filing and shaping these poor stubs?

Marty,

I had a jeweler friend once tell me he uses sewing needles because they are very hard. Measure the diameter of your shafts and match them to the diameter of the needles and them grind them down and sharpen them to the size you need. Never done it myself but he said they woork well and they are cheap.

Hi Marty,

I would offer few suggestions ,

Buy a cheap set of French drivers you don’t need a full 10 set the smaller would be adequate for your needs, then toss the soft inferior blades and buy the Bergeon blades only so you get the quality where it counts, unless you are using these all day you will not need or notice the difference in quality of screwdriver body. I have the full set with a rotating stand a lifetime investment.

You can buy the Bergeon drivers individually so if you got a 0.6, 1.0. 1.2. 1.8 would be off to a good start, there is a half set also in a stand for less than $100 and of course by a set used on ebay and expect to replace the blades.

Thanks guys. I'll check out both of these suggestions- French brands must be known for good quality- I will look into that,Chris.
Steve-you've got me thinking that your friend may be on to something. If the metal alloy is the same or close perhaps this is a way to get around paying so much. I'll have to see what diameters they come in,prices, and how much stress they can take-I'll try one and see what gives first-screw or driver! I think I may have a couple old carpet needles I may be able to "borrow"...

I'll be back if this works out.

A good sharpener is always handy, and also have a "second set" of the high usage sizes ready if you want to keep going.

Try them and if soft replace the tips with bergeon blades later, given the size they will only take so much pressure, often you need to shape the driver to the screw.

here is a good set to start with stand and spare blades

Marty, Sorry for the confusion. I am using two Bregeon sets, the "set of nine on Carousel" and the "Set of nine in Wooden Box" as backup drivers. But the Bergeons 0.100 size and smaller fail too easily, and I have been using "blue steel" French screwdriver blades which seem to hold an edge longer and break less easily

As for the set you could use very well, I totally agree with Chris.

These same screwdriver sets are also available for a little less at Timesavers

Screwdriver set order p/n 13474 $49.75
Screwdriver sharpenre p/n 13529 $ 6.50
