Hello All....

I just purchased and received an Elgin grade 340 pocket watch, s/n 13396105....

The watch is housed in a 14K case and is really in sharp condition as you will see from the photos that I have included....

My main question and interest is in finding out more or any information on the original owner of the watch, Samuel J. Haughey who received the watch from his father on his 21st. birthday on August 30, 1908.

I assume that the watch is an original combination and also the presentation box to be original therefore the location of these folks would have been somewhere in Eastern Pennslyvania around Philadelphia because the Jeweler is James A. Haas & Son....

The hand written note was tucked inside the lining of the presentation box cover.....

The watch has had very little use and looks almost as NOS and I find no Jewelers marks at all on the inside of the cover....

Do you think there is enough info available to be able to find anything out about these folks....

Samuel Haughey Sr. was born Feb 1847 in Pa. In the 1900 census he is living in Philadelphia Pa. & is listed as a conductor on a street railroad.

He is married to Julia (11/1849)& they have the following children living with them at the time;
Marcy E. Nov 1879
Esabel Feb 1871
Cathren July 1881
Elesebeth Oct 1883
Julia May 1885
Samuel Aug 1887

Also living with them is Samuel Sr.'s mother Esebella who is 79 & a widowed

Just got home from work, sorry for the delay. I am sure there will be more, it looks like Jr. went on to working for the Philadelphia Police Dept.

His wife was Agnes(1890) & they also had a daughter Agnes (1918) according to the 1930 census for Philadelphia, it shows Samuel as a secretary for the bureau of police.

That is a outstanding watch, Jerry! And to have the provenance with it is wonderful. Solid gold cased watches are becoming few and far between and to find an original combination is extra special. I think you did very well!

If you do a Google book search there are several transcripts of old Philadelphia Police records that have Samuel on the title page as either the Police Bureau Secretary or Stenographer.

The census records I find show your Samuel married to Agnes & up to 1930 only the one child Agnes listed. I would guess that the daughter Agnes must have married a Huhn who then had a son John M. Huhn

I have not found anything to verify that but I will keep looking.
