It was probably Samuel Kauffman, in the 1900 census he is living in Syracuse & listed as a jeweler proprietor. He was born October 1856 in Germany. He is listed at 662 Madison. It shows he came to this country in 1868.
He is also listed in the Syracuse city directory, so far I see him back to about 1887. In 1888 he is listed as living at 129 Grape as a watchmaker & jeweler.
The 1890 city directory shows these addresses 3 Granger Block 208 E. Genesee, h. 909 Grape.
It appears he died sometime around 1905, according to the 1900 census his wife was Dora. I found a newspaper article (The Post Standard Syracuse NY) dated 03/07/1905 in which Dora Kauffman was yesterday named adminstratrix of the estate of Samuel Kauffman, who died leaving $4,000

You might find the business listed after Samuel died. In the 1900 census he had a son Saul who was 23 & also listed as salesman jewelery. It appears he kept the business running after the father died.
This ad is from Nov. 24, 1911

Edward KitnerTom, thanks again for your help. I would not have any information on my PL's if it was not for your investigating talents.
