I Bought a Columbus!
The auction site had pretty decent pic of the dial and a fuzzy pic of the movement, they mentioned the case was a Fahy's Monarch and from what I could tell it looked pretty good so I took a shot mostly because of the case.

I am very pleased, this watch has a wonderful feel in hand. I don't know anything about Columbus so any info/critique is welcome. I see three somewhat non-positive points, what can you see?

Very nice watch and case, I think 15 jewels, but I could be wrong. Only issues I see are a couple mismatched screws and I think the minute hand may be a bit long.

Very nice Lorne, I don't know much about Columbus watches but yours looks like a nice example. As for the three non positive items...The minute hand is a little long so I am not sure the hands are right. the bow looks like it might not be right. And maybe the case screws?. A beautiful watch.

Thanks for the replies. The things I noticed.

1. As mentioned , the long minute hand.

2. While not a big deal, the engraved building on the back of the case is out of whack. I can't really tell which way is up if the building was not there, perhaps the engraver had the same problem.

3. I wish I had noticed this before I put the camera away. On the left side of the movement where it says "adjusted" the script is different than where it says "safety pinion". It actually looks hand done.

The case engraving does seem strange that it is that "off", have you checked the serial number on the case housing with the covers to see if they match?

The bezel has VI VIII IIII X which would match the case back 246840. There are no numbers in the case housing itself but I have a Fahy's Montauk case, same style and it is numbered the same way and has exactly the same case housing.

Thanks Walter, i'll be down for a "meeting" when the roads are less dangerous, lots of accidents lately.

Can anyone figure out why someone added the hand engraved "adjusted" to this watch?

And the factory script.

Page 171 of the price guide (2009) shows two movements. The one marked "Adjusted" is on the movement that appears to be like yours. I can't tell if it looks the same but that sure looks like your watch, 16J, Grade 4.

Mike, that watch you refer to is similar but not the same, it is marked New Columbus Watch Co.
