A Hamilton "MP" is marked "MASTERPIECE" on the movement. They came in factory cases of Platinum, 18K, 14K, and gold filled.

On the "retail" side OR what most dealers start off asking, platinum is most near impossible to find and are around $3000. 18K are hard to find also and usually around $2000. 14K should be around $1200. Gold filled will run around $500. These prices are generally what sellers start off asking today.

On a "wholesale" side depending on condition of course, platinum usually average $2100, 18K $1400, 14K $850, gold filled $350. These figures are about 70% of retail, and if you can negotiate a better price then you have a talent !

So the value will be in the case for the most part. The "MP's" hold their price very well.

bb

I haven't followed recent sales of 922MPs, but I do have two. Based on what I paid, all the prices quoted in earlier posts seem high. In 2004, I bought a beautiful 18k WG Model B-cased 922MP with a #23 dial and a matching 14k chain and pen knife for $811. In 2012, I bought a lovely platinum 922MP with the extra-cost #3A dial for $1,360. We all know that most pocket watch prices have been soft or declining for years. I doubt these watches would fetch materially more than I paid in today's market.

I did a quick peek at the big auction site and the range appears to be in the 1000-3000 dollar range for the 922 masterpiece grades. I see diverse pricing, brands like Hampden in the 19-23j configurations prices appear to be inflated more they used to bring, they used to be a good bargain, not so much anymore. Elgin 571s appear not to bring what they should and I am a victim of buying more 571s than I need because of pricing. Maybe pricing is soft on the upper level but mid-level pricing appears to be a bit higher from what I have seen and has picked up lately.

Claude, I checked eBay for prices on 922MP before posting my message questioning the prices earlier posters had quoted. I pay little heed to asking prices. I looked at actual sale prices. If I recall correctly, I only saw one sale. I think it was of an 18k example that had been listed at $1900 but had been sold for less. How much less wasn't shown. Therefore, I saw no evidence on eBay of actual recent selling prices.

Tom, since you liked my #23-dialed 922MP, I guess you'll like my #23-dialed 14k WG 904. #23 dials were a $15 extra-cost option when these watches were sold in the 1930s. $15 was a lot of money then. I bought this watch with its original boxes and papers, and its matching 14k WG chain and pen knife for $685 in 2011.
