Rick FarmerPawn Shop Purchase
Private Label - Harwood Bros. Pembroke
I believe this is a "Regina" movement
- has a serial #189568 on movement
- 17 jewel, nickel movement currently not working
- dial is a little rough but not drastic,DS & chipped to plate at 3 and missing second hand
- the case is a GF Fortune and in fairly good shape
and matching serial numbers
Would appreciate if anyone can confirm if this is a "Regina" or suggest otherwise and if possible the approx. year of the model. I think around the year 1900.
I acquired the watch at a pretty good price so I'm thinking I will take it in and get the old fella running again warts and all.

Bill MandersRick,
Sure looks like a few I have had over the years. They were noted for their PL's.

Lorne WasylishenRick, does this say "Elbico"?
If so do a google search.
I have read of these watches, odd that it looks hand scratched.

Rick FarmerHi Lorne, it does say Elbico. Since it was scratched in I did not give it much attention or credibility, not that I knew what Elbico was in any event.
Googled as you suggested and movements looked very similar if not the same but Elbico was stamped on the movements.
Would you have an estimate on the date or range of the production time by any chance?
Thanks
Rick

Lorne WasylishenAnything would be a guess, info on these is sparse at best.
Levy Brothers in Hamilton was selling Elbico watches in 1920.
Based on some other reading, I would say Elbico is a Regina private label for Levy Bros.
The best theory that someone else came up with is that ELBICO is the phonetic of
Levy
Bros.
CO Who knows though, perhaps a collector in the 60's thought it was an Elbico and scratched that on the movement, they/we do some odd things to watches.

Rick FarmerThanks Lorne, appreciate the information. I used to work in the Pembroke area years ago so I will have the - most likely Regina/wannabe Elbico - taken in to be brought back to working order. Will be good to carry around.
Close by is CFB Petawawa and has a lot of sand deposits on the training area of the base. The TransCanada Pipeline system runs through the base and have extra depth cover over the lines. Tank training was carried out there and every once in awhile I would have to go to the base after a report from the helicopter security patrol called and and advised another tank is bogged down in the sand close to the lines. The reminder was to to have the visiting tank drivers not to try and power their way out because they dig the tank deeper doing so. Tow it out or call TransCanada. They were pretty good about it.

Lorne WasylishenIf you know someone there who can give a timeframe when Harwood Bros. were in business that may help you with dating the watch.

Rick FarmerI took this Regina/Elbico watch in for service and repair this past summer and it needed a balance staff. My watch repair fellow was not sure it was a Regina but sent particulars for the staff to sources and it turns one source indicated the staff needed is for an Elbico, not for a Regina brand. So the Elbico scratched on the movement appears to have some merit.
