For the Hampden Gurus
I have a decent knowledge of Hampdens and enjoy collecting them but I was thinking about something in reply to a question so I thought I would ask those who might know a bit more.

The 16 size model 4 the 21 or 23j came in various names such as McKinley, 105, 104,sometimes the early ones has NR or SR badge on them etc but the 19j was typically marked "Railway"

The 16 size model 5 the 21 or 23j came in the same typical names as the model 4's with the exception of the later versions which had the starburst Bunn type finish and those were named Special Railway (23) or New Railway (21) but I don't recall ever seeing a 19j Railway model 5 in the starburst finish.

Does anyone have a 19j Railway Hampden in 16s with the starburst finish or did Hampden never make this version??

Claude, I had a look thru the Hampden book and saw only Model 4's in 19j but will keep an eye out.

If you do a search on the big auction site and enter "Hampden 19 jewel pocket watch" you will see a model 5 Railway listed for $89 for a visual cue. The model 4's are typically gold lettering the model 5s black engraving. I would think the 19j would still have been allowed for RR service prior to the sell out of Hampden in the late 20's so one would think there are some sunburst 19 jewel Hampdens out there.

Ok came home and looked at the Hampden book, on page 70 from 1925 the show the 19, 21, and 23 jewel versions Railway, New Railway, Special Railway and the later two have the sunburst finish but the Railway shown does not have the sunburst finish.

Claude that is interesting. I have had a number of the model 4 Railways but have never seen a model 5 19j Railway.

Claude, as far as I know all model 5 19J Railways have a straight-line damaskeen pattern. The model 4's have the more elaborate pattern much like that on the 4th model 21J McKinley.I have one of each. The sunray pattern is only on The New and Special Railway, model 5.The nice thing about the model 5 19J Railway is that fancy engraved gold motor barrel jewel setting, same as the 23J versions.

Theo I have both also but wondered if I was missing the ray pattern version but it appears they never made that version.
