992E or 992?

992E or 992?

Its me again.When i first started collecting
i bought this Hamilton on ebay and its said 992E
marked Elinvar center wheel.Looking at this watch,
i notice its a 992 marked Elinvar center wheel.I
can't find this combo in the book.Did i get taken again?

Are you asking whether the watch movement should be marked 992E?? If so, the answer is no. Your watch is correct.

Richard, you will hear a lot of people denoting 992s as L, P or E. L being lever set, P being pendant and E being elinvar. In all cases, these designations are not marked on the movements or any part of the watch. Strictly an informational tidbit for ebay or other sales, which is fine.

You have a very fine watch. I would suggest you find a correct case to put it in. Your case originally housed a 992B.

Well.... we CAN assume that, at one time, it held a 992B. That doesn't rule-out the fact that it MIGHT have orginally held a 992E.

The Model #10 case is often associated with the 992E and their dates of introduction coincide closely.

Unless he's able to eradicate the extra set of case-screw marks, he's going to have them. Personally, the case is too nice to just throw away and the 992E IS proper to it. I'd leave it alone.

What is the case serial number? It may be helpful in determining the original movement.

The 992E was introduced in Sept. 1931. The No. 10 case was introduced in 1936 and lasted until the late 40's.

Agreeing with all that is posted above if I read your movement number correctly 2647111 is what I believe I am seeing. That number is from 1939-40 production and is from the second to last run of 992-Elinvar production. The 992B was introduced in October of 1940 and for a time both movements would have been available.

If your case 10 is from that time frame it would probably have something in the neighborhood of a H200000 to H400000 area number. As Robert mentioned we may be able to narrow it down for you from the case number.

By the way, you should see "Elinvar" under the balance and the wheel should be solid, no split like earlier non-Elinvar balance wheels. With the exception of that "extra" pair of case-screw marks it looks fine.

The movement is 2647111 and the case is H118460.

Let's see now your movement 2647111 dates to 1939-40 and the case H118460 is just slightly earlier but close enough to be considered an original combination. As Frank pointed out and Peter clarified this case may have held a 992B movement. There is no explanation for that. As we often say... "If they could only talk" ...we would learn so much from them.
