Marked "R. Jones Special" movement
Here is a set of watch plates I came across. Unsure of the maker. This is all I have. The balance cock numbers do not match the plates. Says 21 jewel Safety Pinion Adjusted serial number1648911 Any Comments

There are 2 members of this site that I'm aware of that have the last name Jones and first initial R.
Richard "Deacon" Jones is a Hampden guy, also Robert V. Jones.

It appears to be an 18sz, 21J, Open Face, "Dueber Watch Co." Grade, Model 3, L/S, from 1902.

Too bad the balance cock doesn't match, but if I were a Rob or Deacon I would be all over it !!

bb

Thanks for the reply's. yes Buster i dug and dug trying to find the proper balance cock.but that is all i could come up with.never could figure why watch makers in the past would completely disassemble watches like this Thanks again Wayne

Taking the movements down for parts cost less in time and money than ordering new parts. First time a major part was used for a retail repair they realized more than the parts watch value and thereby justified parting out the watch.

Now, think about this, the cars most of us drive every day could actually be broken up and sold off in parts and the what is left scrapped for a considerably greater total than the value of the whole car.

Wayne, that is a treasure trove of bits, pieces, good jewels, screws and not the least of which include a mated Center Wheel and Cannon Pinion. PARTS PLUS! As some of us know all too well, Hampden (AND Hamilton!) Cannon pinions are notoriously messy and fragile to deal with if loose, all-too-often leaving us hunting for a new Pinion/wheel pair.

So . . . you have a good parts resource.

Wow! An "R. Jones" Hampden and marked Special! Probably a very valuable watch but if you want to part with it let me know. Thanks to Buster for the heads up. I do have a Deacon watch so a R. Jones would be a nice addition.

Wayne I have been somewhat frustrated because I am recovering from some surgery and now need a new hip. I am really excited to get the watch and when I get it up and going will post pictures for all. So------if I put my Deacon watch next to the R Jones watch would I have a Deacon Jones watch? If I put your watch in a Dueber Special marked case I could have a Deacon Jones Special timepiece! If I keep thinking like that my kids will put me in the home for sure! Interestingly, at least for me, my oldest boy is an Electrician and does appreciate my pocket watches. I made a point of presenting him with a very nice Hampden Menlo Park model when he finished his electricians apprenticeship. His younger brother has a degree in animal science and is a dog lover so the best I could do was an 18 size John Hancock with a fine retriever engraved hunting case. Many thanks again and what a fine club we have.
