Seems I cannot transfer pictures from my new Nikon 4800 to my computer. I called Nikon technican, he walked me thru a few things which did not work. He determined my computer is not able to install mass storage drivers, (whatever that means Smile Confused.

Can anyone be of help?

P. S. I called Toshiba, of course there would be a charge of $35. so I opted not.

I've just checked the specs. of your Nikon 4800. It looks as if it has around 13.5 MB of internal memory ( correct ?). It also looks as if you can use the USB cable to transfer images directly to your PC. What version of windows does your PC have, and what was the software that came along with your camera. ?

Alternatively, you can use removable SD/MMC media to store your images on. There should be a slot on your camera to accept this type of storage media. If you have, you could buy a WELKIN reader for about $20.00, it should also come with it's own software. This would allow you to load images to your PC via a USB connection. Incidentally this is the preferred method I've been using for years with a series of Cannon cameras.

Thanks for responding.

Yes, camera has 13.5 MB of internal memory. I have a Toshiba laptop using Windows XP Home Edition.

I talked with 4 Nikon techs today spending HOURS on the phone. They walked me thru various trouble shooting and nothing seemed to work. We even tried taking pictures using internal memory, then tranferring them to computer and that did not work.
When I purchased my SD memory card, I also purchased a portable USB 2.0 SD card reader. It did not come with any software. I tried using it but that did not work either.

Last tech I talked with said to check the camera and USB cable to another computer to see if that computer has same problem. If not, then a Nikon tech will review my system information they requested I emailed and did. Dave, I'm so frustrated at the moment. Frown Frown Roll Eyes Frown

I thought this would be simple. Nothing is simple. All I wanted to do was transfer my pictures from my camera to computer. Frown

Any suggestions?

why don't you take your card reader and your memory card (one with pictures on it) to either Best Buy or Circuit City and see if they'd try hooking it up to one of their computers to see if they can see your images. It may help them & you trouble shoot the problem

Stephanie, hit start & check your programs for Picture Package, which is the Nikon software. If it's there, you may have to designate the port(USB connection. If not there, try re-loading the software that came with the camera. I have a Nikon 5200 & haven't had any problems(yet! Smile).

Hi Dave & Sam,

I just returned from Circuit City. Tech was able to view my pictures on his laptop. So, that means no problem with my camera or USB cable.

Technician seems to think I have a USB port problem. He said I should update USB port drivers.

P. S. Nikon 4800 came with PictureProject 1.0. Nikon tech even sent me updated PictureProject 1.6 and that did not help.

Can someone walk me thru? Clueless Roll Eyes

here's a link to a USB Driver site which may be of help to you. I don't know this site so I can't vouch for it. Maybe the safest route is to take your laptop back to the guy at Circuit City to see if he can diagnose the USB port problem and come up with a fix.

This is what I found on adding/deleting,etc ports. This is from the Dell support web page, but should be similar. I'm not versed on all computer functions, but you can also go through all the icons in the "Control Panel' on your computer & probably find info too. Occasionally I do this just to have an idea of where something is-these things are mazes

For a list of ports you can add, and information about adding them, click Related Topics.
If you add a port using the Add Printer Wizard, the port you add will appear in the list.

Hi friends!
You would not believe what has happened as a result of purchasing my new camera.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, a friend helped (and I use the word "helped" loosely Roll Eyes) offered his services regarding my problem of not being able to transfer pictures from my camera to my computer. (As you know, the night before I took my camera to Circuit City to ascertain if camera and USB cable were the problem or my computer.) The tech there ruled out camera/USB cable and said he thought it was on a matter of updating USB drivers.

Back to friend - he decided to uninstall USB drivers on my computer, and did that, then discovered he could not reinstall USB drivers without using system application/recovery discs.
Well, let's just say it has been a nightmare. He crashed my computer but thought did not delete ALL DATA on my computer. Comp USA looked at the mess and said, nope, they could not retrieve data, told me data looks to be wiped out, then told me about a place called "DriveSavers" who could, for at least $1500., retrieve data after sending the hard drive to them.

I scoured a number of companies in my area and found one that would give it a try but with no guarantees and for a heafty price. Yesterday, I received the good news that he could retrieve data, but did not know how much of what was good data, what was lost.He copied what he could to 2 DVDs. I went for it. I spent the better part of yesterday and this morning, restoring application/recovery, and am in the process of getting my computer back to where it was before all this mess. I am taking one step at a time, it's been unbelieveable. I have not even began to look at what the company retrieved yet, let alone if my camera will load pictures to my computer.

Many lessons learned here people. I had backed up some things on my computer but was nowhere near up to date with that.

Has this sort of thing happened to you? Want to vent? Smile Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I didn't even know if and when I'd be visiting Chapter 185 because my computer could have been compromised also as a result of all of this terrible mess. I'm so glad that did not happen. Smile

Stephanie Glad to here you are on the way back,,hang in there you wil get it all going okay..

Back about a year ago i had a computer to go blank on a start up,i try and back up files but had not done so often enough..my bigest lose that time was pictures i had took of my grandaughters brithday now gone forever.... With 8 grandkids i take a lot of pictures ,,i now back them up by burning them to a cd the same day i take them.. Smile

a good way to back up your laptop is with a external hard dive. I'm presently using a Western Digital USB 2.0 one to back up all my photo's, and to move them from one PC to another. I also have a second one to back up the operating system on my PC - that way if it crashes or the hard drive fails, I just replace/repair the damage, re-boot on a CD disk and restore all the data quickly. External USB drives run about $100 some dollars, cheap insurance when computers are so important now days.

Thanks for your advice regarding an external hard drive.

Here's the latest saga with my computer:

I now have in my possession 2 DVD copies of data recovered from my hard drive. I was able to retrieve some of the pictures taken from Jan - present and have copied them to my computer. I cannot copy the DVD to my hard drive unfortunately. I also cannot open any of the files. Had a MAC friend try to help but fruitless.
He is a Windows hater EekFrown but did give it his best shot.

A good thing - I can now download pictures from my new camera onto my computer! Smile Forsake one thing for something else. Frown Smile Roll Eyes

Oh Steph, I feel your pain! If I had just a dollar for every hour wasted on fixing a PC, wow!

Just curious, did your XP device manager show any problems under "Universal Serial Bus Contollers"?

I found a new program for cloning your existing hard disk. It's called "Casper XP". I used to use Norton Ghost 9.0 but it doesn't work well with XP SP2. I purchased an extra hard disk and now back up my computer's hard disk about once a month or after installing additional hardware/programs. I put the clone in my safe. If my computer's hard disk should fail, I just install the clone and my computer boots right up.
