Hi All

Picked up a Waltham pocket watch with PL dial.

I would love to get information on the owner of the watch.

on the dail;
S. Porte St. Stephen N.B

The man's name would be S. Porte from St. Stephen, New Brunswick Canada

Thanks for any information

Keith

Keith, no results for that name in the Trader and Canadian Jeweller and as far as I can tell no relation to the Porte of Porte & Markle Jewellers of Winnipeg MB.

Do you know the serial number to narrow the date range?

I did find an article about the death of another gentleman , who was last seen with S. Porte and some other friends. Mr Porte may have been a merchant or mill owner.

The serial number 7024132 dates it to 1896 - 1901

The Dial is why I purchased the watch. The case back is very interesting also. Swing out silverode? case with a gold colored crest.
The dial is the RailRoad 24hr PL. The movement is NOT marked with same information as the dial.

I will have to wait a few more days to post a picture. The postman came early today, so will try to pick it up tomorrow.

Case back with Crest.

Could the Crest material be gold?

This movement is an early 21j 1892 PS from 1896 or so. Would it still be considered a Railroad grade watch?

Thanks

Keith

Very nice! that is the first 1892 RailRoad PL dial I have seen.

I would assume the crest is gold, if brass and that shiny I don't think it would be that crisp.

What is factory stamped on the inside back of the case?

Railroad grade? Yup!

I never did get a response from the museum regarding S. Porte.

Those hands however are not Waltham hands, the ones in the attached photo BELOW are correct.

The inside of the case is marked Century. Above that a star and moon with trade mark. Mark is underlined.

Now I will be on the look out for the proper hands and second hand. You know anybody the has them?

Thanks
Keith

I may have a second hand but it could take a while before I run across it again. I'll let you know if yes. (385)

I'm going to toss in a little quiz here:

If you only have a photo of the RailRoad dial how do you tell if it is an 1883 or an 1892?

If you already know the answer just post to say you do but don't reveal it, let someone figure it out.

Nobody?

The answer is right here, just look at the two dials in this thread, the one I posted is an 1883.

At 1800 hrs. forum time I will draw back the veil of secrecy and reveal the answer.

Shoot, why wait !! The movement wheels are positioned differently on the two models, thus the seconds bit shows up a bit lower, looking from the dial side, on the '83 models.

There was a Samuel Porte in St. St Stephens NB in 1896 who is listed as a jeweler.
